Fascinating concept—underwhelming execution: “Anatomy: A Love Story”

We discussed Dana Schwartz’s Anatomy: A Love Story on May 11, 2023. Schwartz’s 2022 novel, set in 1817 Edinburgh, tells Hazel’s and Jack’s romance that enfolds over corpses and mystery: “Hazel Sinnett is a lady who wants to be a surgeon more than she wants to marry. Jack Currer is a resurrection man who’s just trying to survive in a city where it’s too easy to die.”

“A great idea, but lacking execution—underwhelming!”

Anatomy shows a fascinating concept about a young woman’s feminist dreams in the Regency era. Unfortunately, this promise quickly fizzles out due to the flatness of any characters, the lack of mystery-solving, and the not-like-other-girls-ness of the protagonist.”

“In every way unremarkable. Not even Neil Gaiman found anything to say about the book.”
