A comfort story: “The Scret Garden”

We discussed Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden as part of our Secret garden party on May 23, 2024. This 1911 tale of Mary, Dickon, and Colin, the atmospheric Yorkshire Moors, and the titular locked-up garden has been a beloved classic of children’s literature for more than a century.

Members’ Opinions

“An interesting story, told through initially rather unlikable characters that nevertheless grow on you.”

“I am fully biased—this is one of my comfort stories. There are reasons why everyone behaves the way they do, from the depressed father to the matron who fought for Colin’s life to the kids who were spoiled and obviously turned out that way. And I immensely like that.”
