PADERBORN2READ organizes an afternoon all about Howl’s Moving Castle as a contribution to Paderborn University’s Culture Week.

Diana Wynne Jones’s 1986 children’s novel Howl’s Moving Castle is celebrating its 40-year anniversary. While being a beloved classic to some, it is still a somewhat lesser-known contribution to English children’s literature and received late recognition rather than immediate success. Hayao Miyazaki’s 2004 anime adaptation, on the other hand, immediately broke box office records and quickly became one of Studio Ghibli’s most popular movies next to anime classics such as My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Princess Mononoke (1997), and Spirited Away (2001). We will be looking at both novel and movie adaptation in our Culture Week Special—taking the full tour of Howl’s moving castle.

Snacks and Tea & Arts and Crafts (2.003.00 p.m.)

Howl’s moving castle tour starts with snacks, tea, and arts and crafts stations.

Movie Screening (3.005.00 p.m.)

The tour continues with a joint screening of Hayao Miyazaki’s movie adaptation of Howl’s Moving Castle. The anime broke box office records in Japan and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Movie and Novel Discussion (5.006.00 p.m.)

After the screening, we will discuss both the movie adaptation and Diana Wynne Jones’s original novel, exploring intermedial similarities and differences and their respective impact.

We invite all lovers of books and movies, castles and magic to join us for single activities or for the whole tour!
